Cherry Blossoms are pretty! And that’s a fact! Another fact is that wherever they are, they know how to steal the show. Some weeks back, while I was doing an urban hike in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, I decided to make a stop at the Bison Paddock to take a look at the largest land animal native to the North American continent. Seeing US’s national animal in the City by the Bay was amazing but I was soon distracted by a couple of flowering trees on the other side of the road. I soon learned they were the Kwanzan Cherry Tree in blossom.
Also called Kanzan Cherry (and Japanese Flowering Cherry), this tree itself is a beauty! The branches of this variety of cherry tree fan out and look picture-worthy whether it is spring, summer fall or winter.
In spring, those fanned-out branches are loaded with voluminous blossoms made of a few shades of pink. The layers of petals make these flowers and the trees that bear them unmissable!
Take a look at this stunner —
I hear that this tree’s leaves change color in the fall, and I’d love to go see them then, too.
Some Kwanzan Cherry Tree Facts
For now here are some things I’ve learnt about this tree (apart from the fact that they are absolutely eye-catching!)
- The Kwanzan Cherry Tree can grow up to 40 ft. in height.
- It does not bear fruit.
- This tree has a fairly short life of 15-25 years because this variety easily falls prey to pests, and can be diseased.
- It grows in moist, well-drained soil.
Have you seen this variety of the cherry tree? Do you have more information or pictures to share? I would love to see them in the comments.

Those are gorgeous!
I have not seen Cherry trees before – but have always wanted to!
Aren’t they?!
You should see if it’ll grow on the farm; it’s such a pretty sight in spring. <3
Thank you for your visit, Alycia. 🙂
So very beautiful!!! I have seen Cherry trees in bloom in Washington and Central Park. Not sure if they are Kwanzan cherries but were gorgeous. Thanks for sharing these beauties.
Aren’t they?
Cherry Blossoms are so pretty no matter what variety of cherry trees they are on, no? There’s this other kind of cherry tree in the Japanese Garden near here. The blossoms on that are smaller, more delicate and simpler, if I may say so. 🙂
Thank you for coming to see them, Archana. 🙂
These are beautiful and sure look like the Cherry blossoms or the sakuras that bloom in Bangalore. So glad you joined with these beautiful ones. I am working on tomorrow’ post, Divya and would love to see you around.
Aren’t they?!
I got a few glimpses of the pink blossoms in Bangalore this spring. So pretty!
Thank you for hosting, dear Parul. I’ll be in for the next edition too, I guess. 😉
