Redwood Trees are no strangers here. You’ve met a few famous Giant Sequoias here on TftT. So it’s only fair that you also see some of their cousins here. This time you get to get acquainted with a fairly well-known Coast Redwood — The Grandfather Tree.
While the Giant Sequoias turn out to hold the records for the largest trees in the world, the Coast Redwoods are known to make the tallest trees. Native to California, they have also come to be CA’s State Tree.
The Grandfather Tree
Now, this tree is neither the oldest nor the largest or even the tallest of the coastal redwoods. However, he is among the cream of the lot, and is a roadside attraction so he’s easy to get to.
The Grandfather Tree lives in Northern California in a small town called Piercy. He is said to be be over 1800 years old and over 265 ft. in height. He’s even got an impressive trunk that is around 24ft. wide, and is believed to be among five of the widest coast redwoods.
How to get to this famous Coast Redwood Tree
- If you’d like to go pay your respects to the Grandfather Tree, you’ll find him standing tall just off US 101 in Piercy, CA.
- He’s just a stone’s throw from the famous One Log House, another interesting attraction in this part of CA. (Here you’ll see a small but impressive house inside a tree trunk. It’s got beds, a kitchen, a dining area and a bathroom in it. And it’s on wheels although it’s not moved around anymore.)
- You could even look for the signs to the Grandfather Tree Gift shop. It sits in the shade of this tall tree. The tree and the shop are just south of the well-known Avenue of Giants (a scenic route through Coast Redwoods).

Every time I visit a park with Coast Redwoods, I’m thankful that they decided to preserve at least the last few of these precious trees that are native to CA. (There are new-growth ones too. )

I’ve never been to the parts of California that have the redwoods. This is a tree well worth visiting just to experience it.
This is so unique!
There are several impressive and famous Redwood Giants all over the state. In fact the largest (by volume) three trees in the world are all here. So is the tallest.

I really appreciate the way they highlight these trees by giving them names and signage. And more importantly I salute the conservation of these trees. They are such a joy to see.
