Now, Is that Circumhorizontal Arc!?

circumhorizontal-arc

Did you just read Circumhorizontal Arc in the title and wonder what on earth it was? Maybe you’ll get some answers, here. 🙂

I had never seen anything like this; at least not until a few months ago. We were driving back to Portland, OR from the Tillamook area when I spotted this fascinating natural phenomenon in the eastern sky.

I would have called this colourful thing in the sky ‘a rainbow of some sort’ if I hadn’t come across a picture on GMA in the week that followed. A question was posed to the viewers as to what that was, and I soon had a name for this vibrant sight I had seen only a few days prior to that.
Circumhorizontal Arc.

Quite a colourful piece of information, that. 🙂

I tried to do some extra reading on it but found some confusing information on it too. So I’m not talking about it and adding to the confusion. One thing I’m sure of is that these clouds or the color on the clouds are formed because of the ice crystals up there acting as prisms.

Have you seen a Circumhorizontal Arc or anything like it? Would you know anything more about clouds like this? Do feel free to share it in the comments.

Have you ever seen a double rainbow; a full one at that?

    1. I was in complete awe.
Never expected to see something like that. I guess I was at the right place at the right time, although, I only got to take those pics from a moving car.

Happy weekend, Niranjan. And hey, Onashamsagal!

    1. Definitely there was 'splitting of light' there, but it wasn't much of a bow, USP. It was just spread over a larger area and wasn't as well-defined as a rainbow generally is. And it wasn't moving like the Aurora Borealis.
To me it looked like clouds that had turned colourful. When I tried doing some homework on it, I came across terms: 'rainbow clouds,' and 'fire rainbows; and those sounded like a good names for this colourful thing.
I hear this happens when ice crystal play prism (as opposed to water droplets as in the case of rainbows).

  1. I'll probably not remember the term, but I'll know at least there is one for this wonderful phenomena. I saw this every so often many years ago when I used to commute over the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.
