Grand Canyon at Sunset

Grand Canyon at sunset

My time at the Grand Canyon National Park had begun with a Grand Canyon sunset. And it ended with another golden sunset. Here’s a look back at those winter sunset hours in at this reddish canyon.

We were driving in from Las Vegas (and a detour to Hoover Dam) and it was evening by the time we got to the south rim of the grandest canyon in the world. As we were driving to the canyon we could see the sun make its way down to the horizon and we were racing against time, hoping to have one glimpse of the Grand Canyon before dark.

A Grand Canyon Sunset

Our first and only stop that evening was Mather Point. Thankfully we had enough time to get that first look before we retired for the day.

When the sun is setting in the Southwest (it was a winter evening) this is what the Grand Canyon looks like from the South Rim.

One winter evening at Mather Point

Now, Mather Point is supposed to be one of the most popular points-of-interest on the South Rim and a good place to be at sundown too, they say. So, the following day, after spending the day touring the South Rim we rushed back from the westernmost point (Hermit’s Rest) to catch another Grand Canyon sunset at Mather Point. This time, we chose another spot to stand and stare at the canyon as the sun bathed it in evening light.

As the sun was setting behind us, we watched the north rim being washed in an orangish glow and then get dimmer and dimmer till the colorado plateau on the other bank of the Colorado River was just a vast, straight, flat silhouette.

Here are a few pictures from that second evening at the Grand Canyon:

  1. I’m yet to witness this beauty. Grand Canyon is one of the most spectacular places in the world, and watching a sunset just another level of experience.

    1. It’s one of those places that make you feel really tiny. 🙂
These sunset images don’t do justice to the glow that was there that evening. It was ‘brightness turned up.’ 😀

      Thank you for visiting, Renuka.
      Happy 2020.
