Just adjacent to the farm we’d picked some nectarines from, was another farm that had many a peach tree loaded with fruit that needed to be picked. This was Airaya U Pick farm in Brentwood, CA and this was the place that we had set our GPS Navigation system to, for some fruit-picking that day.
Having mistaken the neighboring farm’s parking lot for Airayas, we stopped there first and ended up picking some nectarines. We then loitered into Airaya and learned that that was the farm that we had planned to visit. Anyway, like I said, the trees were quite full of fruit — both Peaches and Nectarines. And since we’d picked some nectarines, we went for the peaches, here.
Peach Season
In the first week of June, when we were there, it was the white peach’s turn to be picked. The gentleman who manned the U-Pick stand told us that the yellow peaches would be ready in a few weeks. We did see one tree with yellow peaches, though. However, the area was cordoned off so I only managed a few pictures of it.
It was a hot sunny Sunday with summer temperatures hitting us hard even though it was still spring, technically. As the kids picked the low-hanging fuzzy fruit, I quickly clicked a few pictures of the trees on which the white Peaches grew, too.
The Peach Tree
Just as the fruit that is velvet-to-the-touch is otherwise quite like its smooth-skinned cousin, the nectarine, the trees of the two fruits too look pretty much alike (maybe with just some more pointy leaves). 🤔
The fruit botanically called Prunus Persica grows on a deciduous tree and is said to be pruned to be kept at 10-13 feet in height. Otherwise this tree grows up to 23ft. The Peach Tree (like its close of kin, the nectarine) seems to want warm weather as well as some cold weather, and a well-draining ground to grow on.
Peach might be the state fruit of Georgia. However, the hot summer months of California and the cold months later in the year are said to be conducive to the Peach Tree.
