Driving into a winter sunrise

Sunrise Sky, California
Painted skies of a winter sunrise

Over the Christmas holidays, we made a trip to San Diego, California. And on that drive down to South, we witnessed painting-like skies and a typical winter sunrise.

Since it’s winter, the sun not only rises a bit late but it also kind-of rises in the south-east for us up here in the northern hemisphere. As such, it felt like we were driving into the sunrise.

When we started our trip it was still dark outside even though it was past 6 in the morning. During that drive from Northern California to the southern part of the state, we watched the whole process of the sun making it’s way up, as we headed down Interstate 5 (I-5). For all of that time, we were in California’s Central Valley so there was no obstruction between the windshield and the giant projector that screened the show.

Add to that the fact that hazy summer and fall were behind us and it was a clearer December sky that was hosting the sunrise that day — it was a perfect winter sunrise.

As we watched the day break, I managed a few not-so-bad pictures on my phone and a point-and-shoot. And better still, I got to capture these sights without having to stop at all — remember — there was nothing in the way as far as that view was concerned. 😉 🙂

So, I’ll let these early-morning sky shots make the first post for the year.

  1. I thought they are sunset pictures. 🙂 The colors are so intense. It’s always rewarding to get up early. There’s nothing like witnessing the morning hues of the sky.

    1. It seems that winter sunrises (and sunsets) are very colourful considering the winter showers keep the air here washed and clean.
I don’t see a lot of sunrises. So this was a total treat.

Happy New Year to you, Renuka. 🙂
