Say Hello to the Bottle Tree

Bottle Tree, Stanford University. CA

This, I believe is a Bottle Tree. I found it in Stanford University in California, a few years back. It was the shape of the tree that caught my eye and made me want to take a picture of it.

And then I seem to have forgotten about it. Then when I was putting together a photo tour of the Stanford campus I saw it and decided to look it up and see if I could learn about it. And guess what — I actually found an online tree guide on the trees on campus. Considering the shape and the location I’m quite confident that a Bottle Tree it is!

If I’m not wrong, the botanical name of this tree in the picture, or the Bottle Tree is Brachychiton Rupestris.

Says the Tree Guide: The Bottle Tree is a relative of the Australian Flame Tree. The specimen is only about 12 feet tall. With age, it will form an enlarged bottle-shaped trunk that holds water. It has distinctive finger-liked lobed leaves.

If you happen to be in the Palo Alto area sometime and would like to see this tree for yourself, you will find it in the Main Quad near Stanford Memorial Church.
