Last spring, we had gone to Golden Gate Park to do some walking around and to see the tulips at Queen Wilhelmina Garden there, and on the way back I happened to see some huge golden poppies on Hyde Street. They were on a wall and along with them was an equally large butterfly. It was a Monarch Butterfly and the pretty thing stood out, too. That large Monarch Butterfly mural is what you are going to see first.
This work of art is one of a series of murals called Migrating Mural that hopes to trace the migratory path of the Monarch Butterfly. On this wall you see a Monarch but on other sides of this 11-story building are some other murals painted by the same set of artists who worked here. Painted here are a few other butterflies found in the San Francisco area, some of them now extinct due to urbanization.
This Migration Mural was put together by Ink Dwell Studio. Headed by scientific artist Jane Kim, it was a team of all-female artists brought this giant mural to life. If you would like to learn more about the group and their art, visit Ink Dwell.
And if you’d like to look for this wonderful butterfly mural when you’re in San Francisco, you’ll find it at the intersection of O’Farrell and Hyde Streets. The mural is on 455 Hyde, to be precise.

Another Hyde Street Mural: Humming with Life
A coming together of a large number of colors, patterns and details, there’s another mural that is Humming with Life on San Francisco’s Hyde Street.
Humming with life is a large canvas on the corner of a building and comprises hummingbirds in flight, people of different cultures, some ethnic motifs, and musical instruments and notes. It seems to be a representation of the community and of the city of San Francisco, too.
This one was created by Johanna Poethig and it dates back to August of 2011. It is said to have been sponsored by the North of Market/Tenderloin Community Development Benefit District and the San Francisco Community Challenge Grant Program. It has also had the support of the US Postal Service.

Isn’t it such a wonderful creation?! I happened to do some reading about this mural and the artist, and I hear they mapped out the whole thing on paper. And each artist’s portion of the mural was worked out separately on it and they did it in a ‘paint by number,’ style. Impressive! 🙂

Last year, we went to a place on California’s Central Coast where these butterflies stop for a while during their migration. It was a wonderful sight to see them clustered around eucalyptus leaves. Unfortunately I didn’t bring back great pictures but I do have a post about that trip somewhere in here. 😀
