Of Sundaes and Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares

Ghirardelli Mural - Tracy, CA

This week, I bring you a sundae and some chocolates you should try when you’re in California. 😀 This is the Ghirardelli mural at the Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Factory Outlet near Tracy, CA.

This large painting was created by ‘Wall and Wall,’ which is a Bay Area-based professional mural company. And this mural seems to be calling out to people travelling on Interstate-580 to come and have some of Ghirardelli’s famous Classic Hot Fudge Sundae, and maybe also pick up some of those popular Ghirardelli Squares.

The Sundae and Squares aren’t the only things you can pick up here. There are other chocolates, ice creams, shakes, chocolates in miniature cable cars and other keepsake boxes, too.

If you asked me what to shop for when in CA or what to take back from here, my list of suggestions would surely feature some Ghirardelli Chocolate. Ghirardelli, to some of us, is a very Californian Chocolate. I hear that this much-loved chocolate brand was first conceived right here in SF and started as ground chocolate. The idea was born at the confectionery store owned by a certain Domnigo Ghirardelli, a businessman of Italian descent who had come to Northern California during the California Gold Rush.

Now over a century-and-a-half old, Ghirardelli’s third store and first confectionery is a major POI for those visiting San Francisco, CA. This city landmark is now called Ghirardelli Square. The company has outlets and stores in Lathrope, Tracy, San Leandro, to name a few locations. There’s one in Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, CA, too.

Have you been to that attraction in San Francisco or a Ghirardelli outlet? Or is there a chocolate we should try or buy when we visit your hometown or region?

  1. Loved this post! Ghirardelli really is such a California classic. I’ve had their Hot Fudge Sundae at Ghirardelli Square and it’s every bit as amazing as you described. That mural near Tracy sounds like a fun road trip stop too. Little treats like this are the best break from busy days, especially when classes pile up and I wish I could just pay someone take my online course for me. Thanks for sharing this sweet California gem!
