Street Art from Santa Monica – II

Leaf Mural - Santa Monica, California

We’re back in Santa Monica, CA, this time to look at another mural. This one is a picture of a couple of leaves painted on the side of a multi-story building, I believe is a hotel. Found at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Pico, this leaf mural is by artist Spencer Mar Guilburt, and it looks like it’s titled — A Canvas for Discovery

A Canvas for Discovery is a painting of a tall leaf and a shorter one against a petal-patterned background. My reading and a look at some more of the artist’s paintings tell me that that is a pattern often used by Guilburt and that he calls these geometric petals fireflowers.

I also discovered a picture of this mural in which the artwork covered all of that wall. I’m wondering if I spotted the mural when it was only half-done🤔 On second thoughts, I think more of the background pattern was added to the piece to give it more volume. [You can see it in its full form (and more fireflower-patterned work done by the artist here.)]

I found this mural last spring when I visited the Venice – Santa Monica area. While I was there I spotted a lot of murals. If you missed the posts and would like to see them, you’ll find them here:

    1. The white spot was later painted yellow — to look like the sun. From the pictures on the web, I see that that mural has been extended to the whole wall.
The blue strip might have something written on it. (The artist’s name, maybe.)

  1. Interesting way to use a huge space — creating a giant pattern and a brobdignagian leaf! Good find! I remember seeing a lot of murals a few years ago when I visited that area. I wonder why some places attract or sponsor so much more street art than others.

    1. It really does catch your eye. And I think they’ve got the whole wall covered with that background pattern, now.

Thank you for coming this way, Magiceye. 🙂
