Come, Fall in Love with Lundy Canyon

Lundy Canyon

On the Eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada are several places that can take your breath away. One such place is the Lundy Canyon with its high canyon walls, forested slopes and a beautiful blue lake. Now the only thing better than that image has to be Lundy Canyon in the fall.

When fall rolls in, the aspen trees that cover the hillsides and surround the lake, turn the canyon into a landscape dyed in a bright flaming yellow hue.

Lundy Lake Road

Tipsy from the Trip to Lundy Canyon (Elev. 7660 ft.)

It was in the fall of 2022 — the first weekend of October, to be precise — that we visited the area. We were on a leaf-peeping trip in the Eastern Sierras, and if you’ve read my previous posts on the area you might recall that I called Lundy Canyon the grand finale to that fall trip to the other side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.

The drive to the canyon started when we got off US 395 and headed west and onto the Sierras. As Lundy Lake Road curved through the rocky terrain, we started seeing patches of yellow here and there, and then an azure body of water came into view and there were some fall colors to contrast it. We couldn’t resist stopping and taking a better look at the sight.

We drove on and as we went further into the canyon it felt like the fall color was being turned up all the way until we were bang in the middle of an amber scenery.

It felt like a dream! Believe it or not, I felt like a tiny figure in a landscape painting.

On the way out of the lake, we made a second stop by the lake, this time where the lake’s parking lot was. And this is what the lake looks like from the West end:

We also made another stop at Lundy Canyon Campground on the drive out and the grove there was also a very pretty sight.

How to get to Lundy Canyon

The canyon lies just off US 395, and is situated somewhat between Mono Lake Vista Point and Lee Vining.

As you drive off the highway and into the mountains, a 5-mile drive will take you towards Lundy Lake Campground area on the western side of the lake. (You could enter ‘Lundy Lake Campground’ into your navigation system and you’ll get to the west end of the lake.

Things to do around here

Leaf peeping isn’t the only thing to do here in Lundy Canyon
You can camp at Lundy Canyon Campground or Lundy Lake Campground
You can hit the Lundy Canyon trail and go further into the wilderness and see more lakes and waterfalls in the area.

    1. Autumn is! And being able to see her work is something!! I can’t get enough of these colors.
      Thanks a ton, Violette.
You too — have a good time. 🙂

        1. I really enjoyed the season this year. I got to see so much more fall foliage than I usually do, and I feel so fortunate.
I’m glad I was able to share these sights.

          Thank you, Rupam. 🙂

  1. Breathtaking to say the least. So lucky to have the opportunity to explore these gorgeous landscapes near Neveda. That’s a part of US that has been on my bucket list. Have you been to Sedona? I have heard that is also equally gorgeous. Thanks for joining and the next edition goes live today!

  2. Yep, these are breathtaking. Watching the video, I knew I’d have to have my husband drive, or I’d have a line of cars backed up behind me from going so slow. I’ll see the golden aspens in person one day!
