Found in Navajo Nation

Monument Valley Mural, Page, Arizona.

This week I look back at our trip during Thanksgiving break to pull out a Monument Valley mural I found at the Big Lake Trading Post in Page, Arizona.

The month was November and the year was 2019. We were on the Colorado Plateau and in the Navajo Nation. We had just toured Antelope Canyon and had decided to re-arrange our itinerary, deciding to advance our trip to Monument Valley before the arrival of a snowstorm that was in the forecast.

We were in the middle of a rocky desert. The earth was quite barren. There weren’t a lot of buildings in that whole landscape so I wasn’t expecting to see any murals.

As we had changed our plans for the day, we needed to fill up our gas tank and pick up some sandwiches for the drive to Monument Valley. And when we turned into Big Lake Trading Post, one of the few commercial buildings that seemed to be in the area, a mural on its side caught my eye.

The Monument Valley mural on Big Lake Trading Post, Page, AZ. I know little else about this mural. Would you know who the artist behind this work is?

It was a mural of two elderly Native Americans in the foreground and the red buttes of Monument Valley in the background. The two rock formations you see in the Monument Valley mural are known by the names of West Mitten and East Mitten.

The West Mitten and East Mitten and a third red sandstone butte called the Merrick Butte make one of the most photographed sites of Monument Valley. Since I don’t have a post to link up to, for the famous sight, (the post on Monument Valley is still not up 😬), let me insert a picture of those red rock celebrities of Monument Valley —

After I spotted the Monument Valley mural on Big Lake Trading and before we actually got to Monument Valley, I spotted some more color on one of the buildings we drove past that day.

Since it was a drive by shot, this is all I have to show.

  1. I really enjoyed reading about how you found this Native American mural. The men are so iconic and the Monument Valley in the background is lovely and looks much like your photo of that area. It’s amazing that you also saw another building with what looks like two murals as you were driving to Monument Valley. These are very beautiful finds.

  2. One time I want to visit your beautiful country, too.
Great finds, oh, we all have some past to justify even when it all happened even before our parents were born or very young….

  3. Great find Dee, they are beautiful.
The second mural looks quite pretty too, what a pity there are no close ups of that one.
Thanks for participating in Monday Murals,

    1. Hey Sami,
I know…I wish it was in a place where I could’ve stopped and taken a picture. There seem to be quite a bit to see in that second one.

Thank you so much for hosting, Sami. Have a lovely week. 🙂
