A Great Big Mural of The Great Pacific

Ocean Mural, Bandon, Oregon

Just northeast of Old Town Bandon, Oregon sits an art corner where you will see what looks like a collection of murals but is actually one big mural. One look at it and you will feel that it absolutely belongs there in this coastal town. Walls of whales and two large tanks wrapped in images of a lighthouse, coastal birds, the rugged coast of the Pacific Northwest and of course, the Pacific Ocean make up this ocean mural in Bandon. (And is that a sailor? Or a ship’s captain, maybe?)

This Pacific Ocean themed mural, spread over 2000 sq. ft. of wall space, is on a waste water treatment near the Old Town. I did not see nor did my camera spot the name of the artist behind these works. A bit of research I did on it, tells me that it might have been originally painted by (now late) Jack Champayne who painted several marine-themed murals in this part of the Oregon Coast. And this particular set of paintings seems to have been restored by artist Vicki Affatati, sometime in the last decade, as part of her Bringing Jack Back project.

I drove by this mural a couple of times last summer and managed to take a few pictures. However, I know I haven’t done justice to the work it is, so I picked up a street view screenshot so you can get an idea about the size of this mural.

If you’d like to see this great big mural of the Great Pacific when you’re visiting this quiet little seaside town in Oregon, look for it as you drive on Riverside Drive. There’s no way you’re going to miss this impressive mural or marine creatures. If you need the exact address, it’s 145 Riverside Drive NE.
