Pomponio Beach: Of Sun, Sand and Sandstone Bluffs

Pomponio Beach

I love me some beach time every now and then. And each time I I feel like I have vitamin sea deficiency, I’d like to go to a beach I haven’t been to yet. And living in California means I’m not going to run out of options any time soon! 😉 On one of our drives along Highway 1, we stopped to check out Pomponio Beach in San Mateo County and I really liked it.

What I found most attractive about this place is that it’s not just a plain, flat, sandy area. Fringing the beach here were some sandstone outcrops. You have to get onto the bluffs and scramble down, in order to get to the sand.

Adding to the beauty of the area were some wildflowers throwing a dash of color to the area between the parking lot and the rocks, and the hilly surroundings. Also, there weren’t a lot of people out there that morning and the fog kept making guest appearances on the coast. Pomponio State Beach was a gorgeous picture that morning!

Things to know:

  • Pomponio State Beach is on the San Mateo Coast and stretches for around 2 miles. When you drive down south on CASR1, this beach is a little over 10 miles south of Half Moon Bay.
  • The Pomponio Creek that flows down the Santa Cruz Mountains empties itself right here on Pomponio Beach.
  • You’ll find some hiking options around here
  • There are restrooms as well as picnic tables at this State Beach.
  • It might be crowded on Summer days. Go early in the day if you want to spend some time while it’s still a calm and quiet place.
  • Play safe. Stay Safe.

Also near here are

Wilbur’s Watch – A hike I’d highly recommend
Pigeon Point Lighthouse

You might also be able to see Elephant Seals at
Anõ Nuevo where these mammals nest and hang out during their molting period.

    1. This beach is not one that’s spoken about a lot but sure ought to be. 🙂 It’s quite picturesque.
Thank you for visiting, Lydia. 🙂

  1. I’m glad to be back in the Pacific Northwest and can’t wait to get to the Coast. Probably not as far south as this lovely area though since we’re in Oregon. The Pacific Coast is so much more interesting than the “other coast” where we spend most winters these days.

    1. Hey Sallie, welcome back to the west coast. Enjoy the lovely summer in the PNW. 🙂
Oh really? This coast is better? Much more dramatic, I’m sure. <3❤️

You have some lovely coastal areas up there in the Pacific Northwest. Have fun!! Happy, Happy Summer!! 🙂

    1. I know what you mean. The mountains call me more often but I enjoy my visits to the seaside once in a while. (When we lived in San Jose, we used to go to the coast more often, tho’ )

And when I go, I like beaches like this that have some cliffs and all. There are some like that in this area and near Pacifica. 😍
So many more to check out! 😳😄😄

Thank you, Soma. I hope you are having a good summer. 🙂
