A Wood Line out in the Eucalyptus Woods

Almost hidden behind Lovers’ Lane is another lane that runs along a line of tree trunks laid on the ground. The trunks blend with the trees that tower over them and look like they absolutely belong there. You might even wonder who took the trouble to lay them all out like this if you didn’t know what it really was. This — my friend — is Wood Line by Andy Goldsworthy.

Andy Goldworthy’s Wood Line is an unconventional sculpture in a Eucalyptus Grove in the Presidio of San Francisco.

Running a length of 1200 ft, Wood Line is a line up of Eucalyptus trunks zig-zagging through an area forested with Eucalyptus Trees. Sculptor Andy Goldsworthy is known for making art with things that are natural to the area and this installation here in the Presidio is made of trunks sourced from nearby areas that needed to have trees removed.

Where exactly is Wood Line?

This wood sculpture lies between Presidio Boulevard, and Lovers’s Lane, one of the oldest paths in the Presidio.

How to get there

If you want to see Wood Line alone, make your way into the Presidio and look for the Trailhead Parking on W. Pacific Avenue and not very far from Presidio Boulevard. And then walk back toward Lovers’ Lane.

However, if you’d like to also hike the loop formed by Ecology Trail and Lovers Lane, you could also park at the lot near Inspiration Point and walk down the steps by the lot. Remember that Wood Line runs parallel to Lovers’ Lane. Just look for the Eucalyptus Grove and you won’t miss it.

  1. I am just realizing that it would take a lifetime to discover and visit all the places worth visiting in the Bay Area. We are so lucky to live here with abundance of outdoor activities and places to seek solitude. Thanks for this post. I’ve never been here.

    1. You are absolutely right! California is ‘wonderful’ in the true sense of the term. I couldn’t agree more — we ARE fortunate!
You are so welcome. I look forward to seeing Wood Line thru your eyes, now. 🙂

      Have a good week, M. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Shiju.

This piece truly becomes ‘one with the environment.’ Now I’d like to see some more of this artist’s works.
Thank you for your visit and comment, Shiju.
      Have a great week. 🙂

    1. I believe some varieties do. I’ve seen some groves that are pretty dark because the tall eucalyptus trees don’t let a lot of light in. 🙂
Thank you so much for coming this way, Joanna. 🙂

    1. They absolutely do! And aren’t we filled with awe when nature makes us feel ‘tiny?!’ 😁❤️

Thank you so much for stopping by, Archana. 🙂

  2. Absolutely love the views and the tall trees have all my heart. So gorgeous and i am so glad you shared, Divya. Thank you so much! I am late for the second Thursday but i am taking a plunge and going to post. Would love for you to join. Take care
