Found in Solvang: Thumbelina

Remember Thumbelina? The central character of Thumbelina – the story of the girl who was no bigger than the size of a man’s thumb? I found this cute painting of hers on a wall in Solvang Restaurant in Solvang, California.

Solvang is a very Danish town with windmills, half-timbered buildings, Danish pastries and buildings sporting storks on their roofs and little elf-houses fixed on their walls.  You will even find shoe-stores selling clogs, restaurants serving Danish dishes and Danish bakeries with shelves of Danish Cookies and Kransekage among other delicacies. While visiting there, one might even forget that he or she is in California on the west coast of the United States.

Solvang also very-proudly celebrates Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. There’s a bust of the author at a park in the city. There’s also a fountain in Denmarket Square with Anderson’s Little Mermaid sitting on it. And there’s even a Hans Christian Anderson Museum in Solvang.

Coming back to the Thumbelina on the wall, did you know that she was also a creation of Hans Christian Anderson. Anderson is best know for his stories for children that went on to become children’s classics. The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea, The Little Match Girl, The Ugly Duckling and The Snow Queen are just a few of the other stories that were penned by this great author.
