A Boy and his Fishing Rod: Real or Painted?

A Trompe-l'œil mural by Greg Brown. Palo Alto, CA.

Here’s a mural you’ll want to take a second look at. How real does this boy-with-a-fishing-rod look? That shadow creates quite an illusion, does it not? That’s not all. Even the window and grilles you see to the right of the boy is also part of the mural by artist Greg Brown. Time for a third look at the mural! 🙂

Here’s a closer look at the window (so you can see that the window and the shadow of the grilles are all painted on the wall ) —

A Trompe-l’œil mural by Greg Brown. Palo Alto, CA.

This boy-with-a-fishing-rod mural was found in Palo Alto, California, a long time ago. I know not if this mural is still up. It’s a gem so I hope it still is.

Last week as I was going through a travel album that dates back to 2012, I chanced upon this picture I had taken after a walking tour of Stanford University. I seem to have completely forgotten about it.

I hear that the muralist behind this superb piece of art, Greg Brown is known for his realistic art. His subjects seem to be life-sized, placed well onto its backgrounds and almost always had shadows. You can see some of his works in Palo Alto on paloaltohistory.org

I also read that there are several of his works all over San Francisco Bay Area. I love to see if I can find a few more. 😉 Have you seen any Greg Brown murals?

Did you know: That murals like this are called Trompe-l’œil murals? Trompe-l’œil means ‘trick the eye’ in French and this technique is used by artists to create realistic art with a three-dimensional effect.

If you like this mural, you might also like this one –>> Mack and the Boys of Cannery Row, (characters of the John Steinbeck book Cannery Row), found near Cannery Row in Monterey Bay, CA.

    1. I swear!
I think I’d also do better with a book than a rod. 😁

I’m so glad this brought back some good memories. I hope you are taking good care of yourself, Iris. Have a good week. 🙂
