Spotted On San Diego’s Streets

San Diego Murals

During the months-long break from Monday Murals, I had made a couple of visits to Southern California. When I was there in December, I managed to click some pictures of some San Diego Street art and here they are!

The first one here is on a circular building in Balboa Park. That’s Centro Cultural de la Raza, which can be easily spotted because of the shape of the building and the murals all over it. Centro Cultural de la Raza is said to be is a non-profit organization with the specific mission to create, preserve, promote and educate about Chicano, Mexicano, Native American and Latino art & culture.

The mural that wraps around the building is a montage of cultural references and is so apt for the centre’s building. I read that it was painted by multiple artists. The next time I go that side, I’m going to go all around the structure and get some better pictures of these murals.

Not far from Centro Cultural de la Raza are these utility boxes with lots of color on them. These, I hear are projects done by local students.

If you’d like to see them, these boxes are at the intersection of Park and Russ Boulevards (you’ll see them as you go towards 11th Avenue).

If you’d like to see more utility box art done by students, visit Found in the Capital of Silicon Valley, a collection from San Jose, CA. (These lovely pieces of art are from 2015 so I’m not sure they’re still up.)

    1. It sure is. And it takes a lifetime to find the right pieces, doesn’t it?
Ah! let’s not go there! 😁

I hope you are doing well, Iris. 🙂

    1. I have to go take a better look at that building the next time I go that side. 🙂
Thank you for hosting, Sami. 🙂

      Have a lovely week. 🙂

  1. Utilitybox art should have its own category — it keeps getting better and better! Those are great.
