During summer break earlier this year, we spent some time up in the North Coast exploring the area and taking in California’s Redwood Empire. While we were in the area we drove through Avenue of Giants, drove through Eureka and it’s old-world charm, hiked through a bit of Redwood State and National Parks and relaxed in Trinidad. In the middle of all of this, one night we chose to go get some spicy food, and ended up finding some glimpses of Indian heritage in Eureka, CA.
We’d gone to pick up some food from a place called Tandoori Bites just off 101 in Eureka and it was quite a treat to see some murals of Indian monuments all over the building. There was a Taj Mahal, the Jawab Masjid (a mosque in the Taj Mahal complex) and the Mughal Gate (the main entrance to the Taj Mahal) to name a few of the monuments.
The outer walls of the building also had this sunset scene and silhouettes of what look like more more Mughal architecture and in the forefront, a picture of a warrior on a horse. The artist calls this mural Bhai Bachittar Singh and the Elephant.
And it apparently depicts the story of Bhai Bachittar Singh — Guru Gobind Singh’s general — who led an army of Sikhs and fought an intoxicated elephant that was sent in to fight Guru Gobind Singh at Lohgarh Fort.
The artist: The person behind these extensive murals around the building is Gabriel Lopez Demarco, an Argentinian traveling artist.
The monuments and the war scene are not the only paintings on the walls of this building in Eureka. There’s another mural of peacocks (the national bird of India) and another grand mural of a Sikh festival called Hola Mahalla. You can see the mural as well as other works of Demarco on his IG account.
