Can you see Fall Colors around Lake Tahoe?

fall colors around Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe, California

You’ve probably heard of this beautiful blue lake in California. If you have, then you probably know Lake Tahoe as a popular winter destination thanks to all the snow it gets and the ski slopes around it. And because it is quite a sight all year round, it also sees a lot of visitors in the summer when families are out traveling. Now, if you’re wondering if you can see fall colors around Lake Tahoe, this post is for you.

This alpine lake sits at an elevation of 6,225 ft. Situated on the Sierra Nevada Mountains, most of the trees around here are evergreen ones but you won’t be disappointed if you visit in fall. When fall comes around, the Aspens, Cottonwood and Sugar Maple around the lake and in the small towns on its shores begin to show some shades of autumn.

It was in the first week of October that I was up there by this lake up on the mountains. As such, the fall colors weren’t peaking yet. There were pops of colors here and there and it made for some delightful sights. Here are some pictures I brought back from my fall trip to Lake Tahoe:

I’m sure if I’d gone a week or so later, I might have caught more color around these gorgeous blue waters.

What can you do in the Tahoe area in fall?

(Other than try to spot some fall foliage around the lake)
(And if it’s in October that you’re there, the Heavenly Gondola, another big tourist attraction there, might be out of service. Yet there are plenty of things you can do around the lake)

  • Drive around the lake.
  • Hop on a Lake Cruise
  • Take a boat out into the lake
  • Do a hike or two around the lake
  • Watch a fall sunset
  • Bonus idea: Drive to Hope Valley to see some fall colors in the alpine valley. (Hope Valley is just a half hour’s drive from South Lake Tahoe.

Have you been to Lake Tahoe? Have you gone leaf peeping around it? If yes, I’d love to see the sights you brought back. Feel free to leave links to your blogposts or social media posts on Lake Tahoe in fall.

    1. Thank you.
We get to enjoy these colors for a good month and a half before the rains come. This weekend we’re expecting a storm that’s going to bring down all these leaves.
We’re going into bare trees season. :-/

I do wish the fall foliage lasted longer. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by. 🙂

  1. …Dee, thanks for taking me along to see the sights of a place that I’ve heard of, but never seen.

    1. Hey Soma,
Long time! I hope you’re doing well.

If you plan to go see some fall color around Tahoe, try to go around the second week of October, ok. It looks like that’s when the colors here peak. And then, visit Hope Valley, too. 😉 It’s just another 15-20 minutes away.

      Take care, Soma. 🙂

    1. No? I’m glad you got to finally catch some color, yourself.
Oh yeah — I think I have one more post to link. More fall foliage. 😀
Thank you so much for hosting, dear Parul.
And have a fantastic new year!
