Tahoe in the summer: To go or not to go?

When you think of Lake Tahoe, are you imagining that blue lake embedded in a clean, thick, white landscape? If yes, it’s time to imagine that famous 3-shades-of-blue lake in the middle of some greenery. Think of the lake in it’s bluest blues; when the temperature goes up to ‘pleasant’ and the concentration of the algae in the water goes down. Think of not having to wear heavy winter wear when going up the gondola and not having numb fingers up there at Heavenly’s observation deck. Better still, try visiting Tahoe in the summer. 

Tahoe minus the snow is not a bad picture. I hear the lake is bluer because the algae level goes down when the temperature goes up. And you won’t have to deal with just as much crowds as you would in Tahoe’s winter days..

And there’s plenty to do in Tahoe in summer; even up on Heavenly Mountain. 

1. Try out other adventure activities on Heavenly Mountain

So what if the ski season has wound up. When Heavenly Gondola starts operating in the summer, it takes you up to activities like rock climbing, gem panning and zip lining. (We spent too much time in line, waiting to purchase tickets for the activities. So it might not be a bad idea to get your tickets while you are checking in for the Gondola ride, down at Heavenly Village.)

You can also hike the trails and grab some lunch at Tamarack Lodge. And since it is summer, you might even have a live band performing for you at the Lodge.

2. Go on a Lake Cruise

Summer-like weather means the boats come out and sail you across the lake on Lunch Cruises, Sunset Cruises, even Photography Cruises. You might have to look around to pick a cruise that works for you in terms of interests and prices.

Or you could indulge in a private boat ride on a ski boat. (A Tipsy from the TRIP recommendation, if you’ve been on a Tahoe-cruise during one your previous trips.)

3. Drive around the lake

4. Do some beach hopping

There is no need to worry about snow and chains for your tires, in the summer. Just enjoy the drive around the lake and stop at a lake beach or two. (Now, the beaches may be a bit too crowded in the summer, so start your beach day a little earlier than usual.)

And while you are on the drive, look out for the scenic overlooks. Also, keep your cameras ready for the Cave Rock on the eastern part of the lake (on US 50).
