A Home in a Tree-Trunk

One Log House, Garberville, CA

If you have visited the post on the Drive Thru Tree (or Chandelier Tree) you know by now that Redwood trees can be enormous both in terms of height and width. Here’s something you may not have imagined ever; it is a house in a tree trunk, a full-fledged one at that. One Log House in Garberville, CA has it all: beds, kitchenette, living and dining spaces, and everything. You have to see it to believe it.

How about a quick tour of this house on wheels?

Famous One Log House
This plank says it all.

They say it took 8 months to remove the wood inside and make it hollow enough to set up a living quarter in there.

This house in a trunk stands on wheels. The architect of this house Art Schmock wanted to take it around the country but found that the size made it almost impossible to do so.

One Log House, which was completed in 1946 now lies beside Highway 101 (US Route 101) in Garberville, California.

How to see this house in a tree trunk:

This house on wheels is open to the public. So you can see it too.

All you have to do is walk into the gift shop near the Log House, collect your key code from the person in there and use it to find your way into this wooden wonder house.

When I stepped out, I just had to click a picture of the wheels still attached to the One Log House.

  1. Really good…liked the pics… I hope they don't plan to make any more of them.. it will bleed my heart to see more of these gentle giants to be fallen. I believe Redwoods are now protected species.

    1. Redwoods really are gorgeous. Don't worry Desi Traveler. I don't think they'll make any more of this; I'm sure it's a whole lot of work.
A lot of these trees are now in 'State Parks' so they are well protected. Long live the redwoods :).

    1. Hmm… Faraway Tree used to be one of my favourite books too. I look forward to reading it with my little one in a couple of years.
Doesn't One-Log House look like the perfect place to curl up with a book.:)

    1. Fantastic, it is. Now if only we could dwell in a place like this :(. But then again, it may not look like this if people lived in it.
It is an awesome place, Siddharth.

    1. The interiors are beautifully done up. It's a small space but very well managed with shelves for books and crockery and all. I found the work desk to be a great idea, too.
It's such a pleasure, Tanya. Thank you for coming by.

  2. Yeah. I have read about the red wood trees. They are gigantic. A complete home in a tree trunk is a unique and novel idea. It seems so lovely and great you found it and I am sure you would have a great time. This is terrific and the pictures look fabulous. I want to go there immediately.

    1. Isn't is super cool? You'll have to make one in that case, Bikram. :). It's an extra-large showpiece these days. It looks pretty secure too. Entry is allowed only through one door and you need to go to the gift store next to it and pick up a key code so as to get in. (It's got one of those door handles with an electronic code lock and all.)
Unfortunately, there's a lot of graffiti on the doors.

  3. Wow, this is so cool. Reminds me of those giant sequoia trees in Yosemite. I must say, you are in a lovely location. Did you guys rent the place for a few days?

    1. Northern California really is gorgeous. You get to see a lot of these trees in Yosemite.
No Sneha, you can't rent this place. 🙁
Actually that might be a good thing. The log house just might have a longer life this way. It was sad to see graffiti on the doors.
