Spotted in Toledo, WA

Toledo Art

A few weeks back we were in the Pacific Northwest. As we were driving down from Mt. Rainier National Park and heading towards the Vancouver-Portland area, we passed by Toledo, Washington. And I spotted some Toledo art.

The first one was a ‘Welcome to Toledo’ sign with pictures painted into the letters of the town’s name.

The second piece of Toledo Art I found was a mural on a water tower. This artwork was found not very far from the ‘Welcome to Toledo’ sign. This one, I thought might be a portrayal some local history.

And how right I was.

Painted by Peter Goetzinger, this mural tells stories about Toledo’s past. The person you see on the mural — I read — is Simon Plomondon, the first white person to settle in the area. To the left is a lumber train, supposedly carrying wood to a mill. And to his other side (on the other side of the water tower, not in the picture) is a steamboat on the Cowlitz River.

Toledo is a little town that developed on the banks of the Cowlitz River. I hear the city gets its name from a steamboat that sailed the Cowlitz. Situated somewhere between the cities of Olympia and Vancouver, Washington, Toledo has a history of farming and trade from the early 1800s.

(If you know more about Toledo, Washington, feel free to share it with us in the comments. )

Did you notice Toledo’s Geographical Nickname? It’s called ‘Gateway to Mt. St. Helen’s. Mt. St. Helen’s — if you are not familiar with it — is one of the volcanoes of the Cascade Mountains.

If you’d like a trip to Mt. St. Helen’s, visit — Following the lava path back up to the volcano.

  1. Fascinating little town you have discovered! I only knew about Toledo, Spain, and Toledo, Ohio. Good murals.

  2. What an amazing find. I also had never heard of Toledo, WA. I HAVE heard of Mt. St. Helens and remember when it erupted, too. I was in school at the time and we talked about it in class. This was a wonderful find, both the mural and the water tower.

    1. Those national parks up there are so green and so beautiful. (I’m yet to visit North Cascades.) I hope you get to go sooner than later.
Have a lovely week, Pat. 🙂
