Murals in Hawaii -- Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, Big Island

Murals from Hawaii

These are some murals that were found at the visitor center at Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park in Big Island, Hawaii.

These ceramic murals take us back to ancient Hawaii, bits and parts of Polynesian history and showcase the flora you see on the archipelago.

Pu’uhonua O Honaunau is a place where ancient Hawaiians who had done the forbidden and those warriors who had fared badly in battles went to, to seek refuge. As such this place is also known as the Place of Refuge. It is located on the on the west coast of Big Island.

    1. This is only a part of it. The Place of Refuge had so much more to show and it really did take me to the past.
Thank you for stopping by, Mr Bhatia.

  1. A little piece of history revived and remembered by this simple yet important murals. I am so glad they even showcases some plants as some of the domesticated plants traveled with Polynesian people to remote islands

    1. It does say a lot about their history, I'm sure. This post makes me want to delve deeper into Hawaiian history. And I'm going to do just that, soon. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by, Prasad.

    1. I looked up Gaugin's work when he mentioned it. I agree, too. 🙂
I wish I'd spoken to someone in the visitor center and tried to get more info on these murals.
I took these pics a few years back, just because I got attracted to the colours and the images. Back then, little did I know I'd be linking to Monday Murals. 😀

Thank you for coming this way, Sami. 🙂

  2. Mystery oozes from the name itself that echoes of taps of some ancient percussion instrument. The murals complete the dome of mystery. Very well taken photographs.

    1. It is a melodious language they speak around there — very melodious. 🙂
It's interesting place; so much history there; the kind that affected me. I'm sure your read the travel account long back. Pu'uhoua O Honaunau did transport me back in time.

      Thank you, USP

    1. The are. I wish I had more info about the murals while I was there.
I couldn't help clicking a few pics. Never thought that one day I'd be linking it to Monday Mural. 🙂
