Ever since I can remember I have had a fantasy of being in an underwater glass tunnel, watching marine life gracefully glide by. This dream of mine came true when I entered the crystal clear tunnel at the Aquarium of the Bay at San Francisco.
I’d say that there is nothing more mesmerising than being below the surface of the sea; having shoals of fish swim all around you; with just a wall of glass separating you from finned creatures big and small. There’s nothing quite like that hypnotic effect of the swirl of the little fish and absolutely nothing like getting to see the underbelly of the larger predator fish.
The Aquarium of the Bay takes you into the waters of the San Francisco Bay and shows you from its 300 feet of tunnel numerous fish of different varieties. The first tunnel lets you see creatures that live close to the shores while the second tunnel goes further into the bay to show the Sharks and Skittles and Rays.
Being almost one with the marine creatures and watching the sea bass, anchovies, the leopard sharks and the Seven-gilled Sharks go about their businesses oblivious of the world outside is one of the most enchanting experiences I have ever had. I seem to be sinking deeper and deeper into a submarine reverie. You just go ahead and watch the videos below to get a taste of being out in the middle of the sea.
