Sophie Holding the World Together is a work of street art found in San Jose, California. This mural was done by Los Angeles based artist El Mac. This mural that went up in 2017 was commissioned by San Jose Museum of Art.
About Sophie holding the world together, the artist is quoted having said, “In these times when fear, inequity and divisiveness are so prevalent, this mural is intended to convey hope and empathy.”
It was last week when I was in San Jose, that I happened upon a beautiful mural — the picture of a beautiful little girl with a globe in one hand and a flower in the other. I was on the 10th floor of a building when I saw this sight out there. The full picture out that window included roads, ramps and buildings and in the midst of all of this, this girl stood out.
Sophie holding the world together looks like a simple portrait done with black and shades of grey and what looks like an orange halo. Yet it stands out of its surroundings. If you go closer to it or look up the pictures online you might see the many details that come together to create this impact.
Now, moving on to the subject, the person in the mural isΒ Sophie Cruz is a girl of nine years but an activist making her voice heard for undocumented immigrants in the United States.
Says artist El Mac on his blog:Β When I met Sophie to shoot reference photos of her I asked if there was anything she wanted to hold for the photographs, and she came back holding a globe. This seemed perfect, while the lotus was added to symbolize the beauty that can grow from humble origins.Β
Here’s another picture of the mural and it’s surroundings in the ‘Capital of Silicon Valley.’

Quite a story behind this mural. π
Thank you for stopping by, Iris. π
What an interesting mural, well seen!
The girl’s story is also interesting. Sophie’s been making the news since the time she tried to ran out of the crowds and onto the path of the pope when he was visiting DC. And that was when she was 5. And there’s all the work she has been doing ever since. I’m sure we will be hearing more of her. π
Thank you, Marianne. π
Such an innocent message and a wonderful artwork!
The artwork is really wonderful. A closer look at the work (in the video) will show you the style that’s been used and it’s pretty unique.
