For this week’s Monday Mural, is an interesting mural from Three Rivers, California.
I spotted this mural at the Village Centre in Three Rivers, when we went out to lunch at a Mexican Restaurant in the town. The mural seemed to say, ‘TRUS 2009 with Nadi Spencer’ and I thought TRUS was the name of the work.
Later when I went into research mode, I learned that Nadi Spencer was a local artist. What’s more: the Three Rivers artist seems to have created this with school children of different ages. As part of a program for children to work with artists, Spencer is said to have guided students K-8 in the making of this mural. The project is said to have started with kindergartners filling in the larger, easier parts of the picture. Then older students are supposed to have come in and added to it, till finally, the eighth graders took it to completion.
(Now, that we know that much, I presume TRUS stands for Three Rivers Union School.)
I also learned that this mural is called ‘How Crow Became Black,’ and that it likely narrate a story of the Native American tribe that lived in the Southern Sierras and its surroundings.
Three Rivers — if you haven’t heard of it — is a small town on the foothills of the Sierras, just outside what now is ‘Sequoia National Park.’
How Crow Became Black- the mural
Do you know How Crow Became Black or Yokut’s (the Native Americans who lived here) version of it?

Yeah, it’s got a lot of details.
Thank you, Sami.
Thank you for hosting. 🙂
It has indeed a kind of native touch. Very nice.
True, those little details do give the mural a native touch.
Thank you for coming this way, SC.
…wonderful details and it’s nice that students helps in it creature.
I’m sure the student-participation makes it one of those special murals in town.
Thank you for stopping by, Tom.
Beautiful and interesting!

Thank you for coming this way, Iris. 🙂
Wonderful to learn the story behind a mural. Most of the time we see it on a wall, have no way to know who or how or what. It’s a beautiful mural, too.
