Mapped: Historical Sonoma

Sonoma Landmark Map

This week’s mural is a city map of Sonoma. It’s more like a Sonoma Landmark Map, actually. We came across this one on a wall on Broadway a couple of months back. The mural has been done by artist Steffan Gold, says the note at the bottom of it.

The mural seems to mark all the major streets of Sonoma. It also has images of some landmarks of the historic city in northern California. Titled Sonoma In The Valley Of The Moon, the map shows the City Hall, Mission San Francisco Solano, The Barracks and the Bear Flag Monument, to name a few points-of-interest.

While this map on the wall highlights all these structures that talk about the city’s history, it does not forget to represent its present. There’s a vine bordering this Sonoma Landmark Map reminding us that it is also a wine-growing area that California is proud of.

Also painted onto the map are: the flag of California and the state bird and state flower of the Golden State.
(State Bird: California Quail. State Flower: Golden Poppy)

The mural seems to have been commissioned by The Barton Family and it seems to have been up on this wall on Broadway since 2000.

What a unique and totally unusual find. I like how the quail and the poppies are shown together. It’s a beauty.

It was nice to see a street-view map as a mural.
The map with the poppies and the quails was like saying: Sonoma, CA. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you for coming by, Elizabeth.

      That is right.
And those landmarks were pretty close to where the mural was. So it was well-placed too.

When towns have a map like that it’s really a sign that they care about their identity and their visitors! A small town not far from us used to have one but I think it’s gone now.

Good find! best… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
