A Big, Colorful Celebration of Queeroes

Queeroes - A mural in San Francisco, CA.
Found on Octavia and Market, San Francisco, California.

A few weeks back when we were in San Francisco, some hours after I’d spotted those paintings on the red wall that you saw last week, a violet building on Octavia Street caught my attention. This one had a colorful mural painted onto its side. This one, I hear, is called Queeroes.

Queeros is a celebration of Queer Heroes in connection with 50 years of Pride. It’s got local heroes as well as heroes from other parts of the world.

The mural is on the LGBT Center on Octavia and it was painted by artists who identify themselves as Queer. Juan Manuel Carmona and Sim贸n Malvaez are the names behind this celebration-in-paint. The artists are said to have picked out the colors of the Pride flag to depict each of the Queer Heroes in the mural.

Pictured in Queeroes– the mural:
Harvey Milk, Juanita MORE! Sister Roma, Honey Mahogany, Frida Kahlo, Chavela Vargas, Freddie Mercury, James Baldwin, Keith Haring, Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Willi Ninja.

Have you seen this mural? If you’d like to see it when you are in the City by the Bay, remember it’s at the intersection of Octavia and Market Streets (and near the ramp to US 101).

I was actually offended by the title until I read what you had written about the artists. Thank you. I would love to see this in person, but I won’t be traveling west any time soon.

I totally get what you mean, Elizabeth. We have to get to the meaning of the name of the mural to see what a big deal this is. And of course, it’s more meaningful given the background of the artists, themselves.

It is a big beautiful salute, no?
You’ve kind of seen it now.馃槈馃榿

Have a lovely week, Elizabeth. 馃檪

Great one. Our CSD parade was held – but not promoted, so we missed it. How dumb. Thanks to Covid it was small.

…that is a gorgeous building and with the paint job there is no missing it. The figures in the mural have an anonymous look.

I totally agree! Very attractive building. Very attractive mural.
I thought those figures and just enough for one to identify the heroes in it. Love the style. 馃檪

      Thank you, Tom.
      Have a great week. 馃檪
