A pair of hands, one belonging to a toddler and another belonging to an elderly person; an old lady perhaps. In the background is an abstract nest. The nest symbolizes healthcare. And the hands are supposed to tell us that whatever our ages might be, healthcare is something we all need and keep relying on from time to time. This is a mural by artist Bryan Valenzuela and was found on the walls of Golden Valley Health Center in Modesto, California.
This mural is part of a series of artwork that speaks of health and healthcare, their need, and their importance. Called Covered in Art, this art project is a joint effort by Golden Valley Health Center and Covered California, a health insurance exchange based in the Golden State. As such, you might be able to see murals like this at various locations of the Health Center.
Says a plaque on the wall beside the mural:
This work of art is one of a series of murals commissioned by Covered California in collaboration with Golden Valley Health Center as part of the ‘Covered in Art’ project to promote health and wellness in communities across California and attract attention to locations across the state where individuals can enroll in health insurance, get care or participate in activities that foster better health.
Bryan Valenzuela said Nest was inspired by health insurance representing safety, comfort, and peace of mind. The mural features a variety of Covered California Colors and flowing patterns representing the importance of coverage for the city of Modesto. The Covered in Art project is a living demonstration of the fact that health is local and that Covered Californian is woven into the fabric of local communities.
