Nothing beats a Walk on the Golden Gate Bridge!

It's the ultimate urban hike! The International Orange Bridge, Karl - the fog, view of San Francisco Bay and the City by the way! ...
Urban Hike - Golden Gate Bridge
Hike on the Golden Gate Bridge

If youโ€™ve been following this blog for a while now you probably know I can never tire of the city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. I can keep returning to โ€˜The City.โ€™ And driving through the Golden Gate Bridge never gets old. My 52 hikes gave me reason to do an urban hike on the Golden Gate Bridge and wasnโ€™t I tipsy from that walking trip?!

How could one not be?! Iโ€™ve driven through that bridge countless times and even walked on to it a couple of times. This time, however, I decided to walk the whole length of it, and now that that’s behind me, I feel it would have been a shame if I hadnโ€™t done it โ€” at least once!

Urban hike along the Golden Gate Bridge

My hike 24 of 52 happened on an August day. (The day after my 43rd birthday so it wouldnโ€™t be wrong to call it my birthday hike. :D) We started on the south end of the bridge i.e. on the San Francisco side, walked to the north end of the bridge in Marin County and retraced our steps.

The Golden Gate Bridge is 1.7 miles in length and thereโ€™s a pedestrian path on either side of the bridge. As such, you can walk (or bike) the length of this iconic bridge and you should, if you get the chance. It’ll be one of the best 3-mile hikes you’ll ever do!

If youโ€™re there in the summer, you might also bump into Karl the fog. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Now thatโ€™s the famous Pacific fog that loves to hang out here on this world-renowned landmark.

Believe me: That International Orange Bridge, the presence of Karl (the fog), views of Golden Gate Strait and San Francisco, and of course — the skyline of the City by the Bay is a fabulous combination!

See it for yourself:

What you need to know before your urban hike on this world-famous bridge

  • The bridge is 1.7 miles long. The walk up and down this suspension bridge, which spans the Golden Gate Strait is precisely a 3.4-mile one.
  • You can start your walk on the south end (San Francisco) or the north end (Marin County side). There are parking lots on either end (but they might be packed). If you are in SF, youโ€™ll find additional parking further up the hill on Merchant Road or Storey Avenue.
  • San Francisco is almost always on the cold side so if you’d like to stay warm, you might need to dress in layers.
  • Warning: The fog might also join you on the bridge. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (In my opinion, itโ€™s one of the best ways to experience this bridge. However, if you have only a day to spend in The City, I wish you at least one non-foggy day so you can carry back some pictures of the bridge on a clear day, too.)

Love the Golden Gate Bridge! Your birthday hike sounds incredible. It seems you and my wife are the same age; she’ll be turning 43 in December. Thanks for the valuable tips!

No matter how many times you see it, it’s absolutely majestic!

Haha! It was during the work week so all we could do was a weekend trip. And this was a great one even though I’ve been there I-don’t-know-how-many-times’ ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh is it? So cool. Happy birthday to her; much in advance. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for coming this way, Shiju.

Oh yes! I’m so glad I did this. I should have done it long ago.
The views also never get old. And the fog seemed to add another layer of charm.

      Thank you for visiting, Dixie.

One of the most famous bridges, and it’s beautiful! I’ve seen it with the fog coming and going. In 1979. Never forget!

I feel strongly about the Bridge too. Although unlike you I have not walked over the bridge just yet. I went under it, but not over it. I should do that sooner than later.
