If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area and want to go see some tulips but do not want to travel too far, you could visit the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden. This tulip garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco might be a small garden but there’s plenty to see here. From mid- March to mid April this bowl-shaped garden has around 10,000 tulips acting at its centerpiece.

Every spring, the tulips are the biggest attraction here, however, you will see a variety of other flowers adorn this little garden in that large urban park in San Francisco.

Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden

Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, which is at a corner of Golden Gate Park, owes its beauty to the Dutch Bulb Growers’ Association that donates bulbs to the park every year.

Some sources say that the garden gets its name from Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands because she gifted the windmill in the early 1900s and also gave 1000s of tulip bulbs to the city. According to the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, this park was named in honor of Queen Wilhelmina when she breathed her last in 1962.

The Dutch Windmill

The Dutch Windmill is other attraction here at this tulip garden in San Francisco. This historic structure has become a great photo spot too!

Wondering what a windmill is doing here in the Golden Gate Park? Local history says when this park was being built on the sand dunes beside the Pacific Ocean, it needed water so this windmill and the other one south of it (The Murphy Windmill) were used to pump water into the park.

It was in 1903 that the Dutch Windmill became a landmark in this part of the city. And in the early 80s it became a ‘San Francisco Designated Landmark.’

I have been there several times. I am glad that tulips are coming out. I was there two or three weeks ago and they weren’t out yet.

    Very nice photos.

It’s a sweet place. If I’m not able to make it to a tulip field in spring, I’d be happy to see 10,000 tulips in a garden.:)
      Ah! these flowers are gorgeous!

Thank you, Veronica. I hope you’ve been well. 🙂
