One cannot quite separate San Francisco and public art from each other. The City by the Bay loves art. You will see lots of murals on the streets, on its outdoor stairs and in several parking garages in the city. This week we’ll go into a parking garage in the city’s Japantown to see its Japan Center murals.
The first one is that of a Japanese landscape. There are structures built in traditional architecture, a zen garden with rock features, dry oceans and ponds, in it. The mural features some fauna and flora as well. And in front of the mural is a rock-and-gravel mini-garden to add more character to that corner of the garage.
This Japan Center mural is signed Shinpei 2000. And I’m guessing that that is the name of the artist, and the year this lovely piece was created. I tried looking for more information on the muralist and his art but didn’t really find anything. However, I am sure going to be keeping an eye out for Shinpei murals when I’m in San Francisco.
Japanese Landscape
This mural really did seem to brighten up an otherwise dark and deserted parking garage.
It was on a night in May 2024 that I spotted these murals. If you’d like to go see this mural while you’re in San Francisco, let me repeat, it is in the parking garage in the Japan Center (by Geary).
Golden Gate Bridge Mural
By the way, while we were exiting the public parking garage, I spotted another mural, this one of the one and only Golden Gate Bridge, a structure this city and this part of California is proud of. In it is also a great big Pacific Wave trying to make its way through the Golden Gate Strait, and a setting, sun.
Don’t forget to look for this one too, when you’re there!

The Japanese themed murals are fabulous and so well done! The top one almost looks like a photo.
Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Dee.
That was a good find!
Thank you so much for hosting, Sami. ๐
Lovely murals!
They sure are. ๐
I found these a couple of months ago.
I feel it’s time to go back to SF and find some more. ๐
Wonderful murals! I have still some souveniers my Dad brought from Japan in the 70ยดs.
True that!
Oh! they must be such treasures! ๐
Have a good week, Iris. ๐
…important cities have important public art! I seen the “Wave” theme several times. Dee, I hope that you are enjoying your new week.
Hmm.. that sounds right.
San Francisco is quite a symbol of so many things. ๐
Oh yeah? I should look out for the waves, then. Does it mean anything in particular, Tom.
It’s been exciting so far. ๐
These murals are stunning, Dee!
The Japanese landscape is so serene.
Art certainly transforms spaces.
Happy Tuesday!
Oh yes, quite like Japanese gardens, no?! They are such calming gardens.
And yes yes! Art does transform spaces. This one was a really pleasant corner; one that that parking garage needed. ๐
Have a good week, Veronica. ๐
We love going to Japantown! Those mural really brighten up the walls. So pretty! Great share, Dee!
