It is no secret that California has a beautiful coast. The word that I associate with the Golden State’s land-along-the-Pacific-Ocean is ‘dramatic,’ thanks to the rocks, the rugged drops and the coastal fauna and flora, that makes it a wonderful sight. There are so many places from where you can take in all the drama of the coast. And one of the best areas to see California’s rock-rich shoreline has got to be Point Lobos on the Central Coast.
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, as it is called, is located south of Monterey Bay and north of Big Sur. This nature-lover’s paradise is delightful — with vast views of the Great Pacific, a craggy coastline with some incredible rock formations, a couple of beaches, coves, and its vibrant plant ‘n animal life. And if you’re there during whale-migration season, you might even catch sight of a whale or two.
There are several places in the natural reserve where you can just park your cars and enjoy the views. You’ll find some picnic tables where you can savor an outdoor meal, too. However, if you ask me, the best way to experience the area is through a hike.
Hiking in Point Lobos
Point Lobos Natural Reserve has a number of trails running through it. You can walk through the wooded area near this part of the coast, or walk along the coast or even do a bit of both.
Here’s a list of trails in this natural reserve — https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/california/point-lobos-state-natural-reserve
If you’d like to pick one from the trails that we’ve tried and tested, take Point Lobos South Trail. We extended the walk by adding Bird Island Trail to the itinerary. Below are some pictures, if you’d like a little preview of the the trails.
Point Lobos South Shore Trail
This trail is out and out coastal trail. And that means a fairly easy hike with ocean views, sea breeze and all. It’s not a paved trail so be prepared to walk on uneven ground. Here’s your sneak peak of the sights along the way:
Bird Island Trail
This trail starts at the end of South Shore Trail so if you are not too tired and can add a smaller trail to your day, I suggest you do this one, too.
These are some sights you are likely to see from the Bird Island Trail.
Things to know before you go:
- If you’re going on a summer day, expect a lot of people in the area. You might also run into some parking problems.
- The South Shore Trail is around 2 miles
- And the Bird Island Trail, .52 miles.
- Both trails make for scenic and easy hikes
- (As mentioned earlier) be prepared for uneven paths
- These trails are not wheelchair/stroller friendly ones (But that does not mean you do not get to enjoy the sights. You can do a little drive here, and there are some parking spots that also come with a view.)
- The are a couple of restrooms along the way.
