Found in San FranSokyo Square

If you haven’t been to ‘the happiest place on earth’ — the one in Anaheim, CA — recently, you’re probably wondering what or San FranSokyo Square is or where it might be. (Or maybe you’ve watched Big Hero 6 and it rings a bell.) Anyhow, let’s get to that, before we take a long good look at the murals, there.

San FranSokyo Square is in Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California, and is a coming together of San Francisco and Tokyo, a neighborhood inspired by the one in the 2014 Disney movie Big Hero 6. (Have you watched it?)

This home of the lovable Baymax, one of the central characters in the animated movie, is a fusion of Japanese and San Franciscan architecture. Those of you who have been to Disneyland might remember the part of the park that was called Pacific Wharf. When I was there first, it reminded me of bits and parts of San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Cannery Row. Pacific Wharf has now been transformed into this east-meets-west locale called San FranSokyo Square.

I was there two times — once to have lunch one afternoon, and then we returned to the square for Ghirardelli’s famous Hot Fudge Sundae in the evening. So — yes! that popular chocolate-and-ice cream place of SF is still there at the square. You can also do the Boudin Bakery tour here.

Street art from the vibrant San FranSokyo Square

Now that we have a bit of context, let’s look at the street art I found on the walls of San FranSokyo Square from my trip last spring:

If that orange bridge across the Golden Gate Strait was to be constructed with some Japanese architectural features, we’d have a structure like the one in the first or third mural. Not bad, eh?! Look for a model of the ‘Golden Gate Bridge of San FranSokyo’ in the video below.

Another mural I found at ‘the Square’ was that of a Victorian home, another feature of San Francisco’s cityscape. I also found one with a landscape painting featuring some hills and clouds (the famous Pacific fog, maybe) and a poster with a historic street car, and a pagoda in the backyard.
