The Oaksterdam Mural,
Oakland, California.

Last week, I showed you some murals I found in San Francisco. This week, we go across the bay to Oakland, California to see the Oaksterdam mural.

This is a drive by shot of a big bright mural from Oakland, from a few years ago. I see Oakland’s signature street sign — green with an oak on it. I see Fox Theater. I see ‘bart’ and Lake Merit maybe and some other symbols of the city.
It was only later that I saw there was a ‘university’ below the ‘Oaksterdam.’ So I looked it up and learned that Oaksterdam University is a Cannabis university – the first of it’s kind in the US. Now I’m sure you’ll want to know more about it, if you don’t know about it already. So here is the Wikipedia page for “Oaksterdam University.

I also learned that this mural was painted over soon after the university moved out of this building. And that means this mural is no more.

Well captured. Huge wall art. This is something you can not miss when visit the place. On our recent trip to South America we found street art in every corner. Cities look more beautiful when they have some art. We need more such wall arts in India.

They add so much colour and life to a place, don't they?
I saw one on them in the picture post you put up — the one along a road. It looked awesome.

We do need them on our public walls, provided they are touched up from time to time. Bangalore seems to have quite a bit. But the upkeep unfortunately is not up to the mark.

And this one seems to have taught me a little something, too. 🙂

Thank you, Archana. Are you back from India?

That is a great mural. What a pity it has been painted over. It is just as well that shutterbugs like us make records of it.

It was sad to learn that this one was gone. I remember how eye-catching it was because of its size and colour.
However, I'm glad I actually have a pic of this mural.

Nice to see you here again, Liz. 🙂

It really was a good one with all those colours and that size and it seemed to say so much about the city.

I saw the name and amsterdam jumped up in my mind with its liberal cannabis policy and after seeing wikipedia it was true indeed.

Ah ha! That bit about Amsterdam and how it looks at weed was also news to me. I just learnt about the Amsterdam Coffee Shops and the Cannabis Cup and all that. Interesting!

Thank you SC for sharing your knowledge. 🙂

Yes, Prasad. You are so right. The public art does tell us quite a bit about a city. 🙂
I seem to have a few in my travel albums. This meme has become an excuse to bring them out. Now that I'm here, I'm going to be looking for them more carefully. 🙂

I guess some people did have a problem with what it stood for. (Although it showcased some of the city's symbols. )

      Thank you for visiting. 🙂

      I think you are right.

That's both good and bad, depending on what kind of materials they use. It's sad to see the colourful, artistic and meaningful ones go. But if one cannot be maintained, maybe its ok to take it off. 🙂

Great find of the Oaksterdam U!
I like the idea and the curriculum is worth it – at least from the POV of using Marijuana for medical purposes.
    Have a Great Week!

It makes total sense in case of medical purposes. I guess some people really need it. Some time back I learnt that there is a lot of misinformation about it. We need to be educated about the medical uses of it, I believe.

You have a great week too. 🙂
Thank you for swinging by. 🙂

It's a little weird for me to see my own photo reposted, but I'm happy it's gotten more exposure. Yep, it is now long gone, and nothing has taken its place yet. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

You're not saying I indulged in some plagiarism, are you? Because I believe this is my photo; as in — taken through my lens. The mural is not mine tho'. 🙂
Or did you mean you were part of the team behind the mural?

Thank you for this meme — it is an opportunity for me to put out some pictures I've taken during my trips.

No offense intended or accusations made. I thought it was an old shot of mine but now see that though similar they are not the same. I'm sorry for the error and the bad feelings my comment caused. I'm still pleased to see this mural given another showing, especially since it has now been painted over. ODP.
