If you are looking for a small Californian beach-town to holiday in — this summer or next — you could consider Avila Beach on the Central Coast.
Avila Beach
We were there last summer and thought it was a good place to take the kids to, during the holidays.
- It’s a good-looking little place.
- The town is great for evening strolls and dinners by the sea.
- There’s sand to build castles with and waves to play catch with.
- There are several small trips you can make with Avila Beach-as-the-base. (Look for a list at the end of the post)
- And it is not too crowded yet touristy enough, making it a kid-friendly destination.
Avila Beach lies beside the San Luis Bay and is in San Luis Obispo County.Β You might want to go through the gallery on the top of the post to see what we saw on an evening stroll on the promenade.
While we were there we stayed at Avila Lighthouse Suits in a room with a view of the beach. It was a fairly good place to stay. The rooms facing the beach did seem to be right in the middle of all the activity of the town. But late evenings and early mornings were nice-and-quiet with pleasant views of the bay.
During the day the view from our view from our first floor beach-facing room was obstructed by the public parking outside. The easy access to the beach was a ‘plus,’ though.
Avila Sea Caves and Pirate’s Cove Lookout
One morning we drove up Cave Landing Road and stopped at Pirate’s Cove Lookout for some grand views of the bay and its rocky and scenic coast.
Walk further down the hill and you should see Avila Sea Caves or what is left of it.Β Here are some views from the lookout and a from the short walk down the trail to the sea caves. We didn’t go all the way down, that day.
I must say that the views from there were great. I have loads of pictures of the rocks that make up that craggy coast. It’s beautiful out there.

Thank you for coming this way, Lady Fi. π
I have never heard of this beach before, although I’ve travelled down through California from my hometown just over the Canadian border, so I thank you very much for sharing these photos. It looks like exactly the sort of town I’d enjoy visiting with my husband…lots of energetic things for him to do, and plenty of space for me to sit and rest! Thank you for sharing.
