A few years ago, while we were waiting at the SeaTac International Airport in Washington, I came across an eye-catching installation art near one of the luggage carousels at the airport. It was a line up of vintage suitcases and bags. The luggage seemed to be strung onto a steel rod and supported by more rods that serve as stands.
This installation art is called Rainmaker’s Baggage and the mastermind behind this unique work of art is Norman Anderson. It is supposed to be a kinetic sculpture. The baggage on it is designed to move such that when they rotate, a rain-like sound is created.
I don’t remember seeing it move, let alone hearing the sound of the famous rains of the Pacific Northwest. But it sure was one of the most interesting art installations I have ever seen. And it seemed just right for an airport.
Have you seen Rainmaker’s Baggage? Were you fortunate to see the movement of those pieces of luggage that turn into instruments that mimic the sound of the rain?
I am also wondering if this installation is still up at the SeaTac airport or if it was one of those works of art that are part of a rotation program. Do let me know in the comments if you have further information about Rainmaker’s Baggage.
