Freight Car Graffiti

Found in and around Tracy, California: Train Car Graffiti. Do you see art here? Or is it plain vandalism? A post for Monday Mural. ...

Train Car Graffiti

Graffiti on train cars/freight cars is something we have all seen. Whether you like it or not, they definitely catch our eyes. It’s mostly a lot of scribbling-with-spray paint and almost always not a pretty sight. But sometimes there’s some great art hidden in them, isn’t there? This week I bring you pictures from the northwestern part of California’s Central Valley — the Tracy area, to be precise.

Let’s talk Graffiti

Graffiti is usually not a pleasant sight; especially when it’s on road signs and signboards and murals. (I’ve seen some really bad ones, recently.) The worst ones — I believe — are the ones on rocks and tree trunks.

Somehow I don’t dislike this graffiti I see on these freight cars. I mean I don’t mind seeing some train car graffiti. What about you?

I must say that every time I see graffiti of any kind, I wonder how and when all this is done. How they cover all this area without being seen and without getting into trouble is beyond me.

Train Car Graffiti

Some time back, I remember reading a few social media posts about graffitied rail cars. It was on our community’s group page and the original post was a question asking neighbours what had to be done to get those cars removed from the vicinity of the residential area because it didn’t look good.

Then came a slew of comments discussing both sides of these sights. While one group of people called it an eyesore and something that was likely to bring down the prices of the houses in the area, there were others who thought this artwork added character to the area.

What is your opinion about it? πŸ™‚

Many years ago, growing up in the Chicago area, we spent a lot of time waiting for trains. I think it would have been a nice way to break up the wait if there were such fun graffiti to see! Lovely photos.

True, that wasn’t just some tagging.
I’d love to see those trains in Athens.

Thank you for the link, Debbie. Will come by, soon. πŸ™‚

These aren’t so bad. I’ve actually seen nice ones on trains in Portugal.
I also do wonder when these taggers get to paint the trains. Here in Perth this is prohibited and there are cameras on the trains to deter taggers and heavy fines too.

      They aren’t too bad, right? (y) πŸ™‚
Maybe we’ll see those trains in Portugal on Colourful World, soon. πŸ˜‰ Put them up, please…:)

Seriously how do they get away with tagging?!! Cameras should help to an extent. It’s sad to see tags on good murals and other surfaces that shouldn’t have them.

Those are wonderful photos. I’ve also been thinking about murals vs. graffiti. Other than the question of whether the owners of the property (building, train car, bus, RR trestle or whatever) wanted their property to have a painting on it, the quality of the art work seems to vary and sometimes the β€œwanted” work isn’t wonderful and sometimes the β€œunwanted” work is great. It’s a matter of the artists showing or not showing respect for someone else’s property. Also, the worst graffiti sometimes defaces a mural that was wanted, which is the lowest disrespect.

True — it is so disrespectful to tag mural and mar the art there. That is among the worse graffiti.
I like what you were talking in your latest mural post – about having ‘allowed artwork’ on walls/bridges with hopes of keeping the unpleasant graffiti at bay.

Thank you for coming this way, Mae. πŸ™‚

Graffiti has evolved into a fine art! Art is not only about canvases in art galleries.
