Stay And Play at Morro Bay This Summer

Morro Bay is a bustling with activity yet not crowded seaside town in California’s Central Coast. A couple of summers ago, when we were driving from Avila Beach to San Simeon, we’d made a brief stop there. It was a cold foggy morning and we could barely see the locally famous rock that the town was named after. 

A year later, we found ourselves back there in Morro Bay, this time to spend a weekend there and what a sweet and pleasant stay it was! We stayed at an inn on the Embarcadero with a balcony that overlooked the Morro Bay and Morro Bay Harbor. There was even a view of Morro Rock-in-the-distance. 

Morro Bay and Morro Rock

The City of Morro Bay gets its name from the rock that towers over the town and the bay around which it developed. And Morro Rock itself gets its name from an explorer who called it El Moro or The Crown Rock, tells some literature about the town that I found in my hotel room. *

Now Morro Rock is supposed to be a rock that plugged a now eroded volcano here on the central coast. More about that, later. Now, let me recall what we did while we were there in this coastal town so that YOU can plan your next summer trip. 😉

What to do in Morro Bay

1. Smell the seaside air. And enjoy views of the bay, the harbor and of course Morro Rock.

2. Walk along the Embarcadero and Morro Beach towards Morro Rock.

3. During that stroll, look out for seals and watch sea otters laze and frolic in the waters of the Bay. Also, keep an eye out for the public art along the way (Read: the Ford Bench installation art, the murals and art on the utility boxes and trash cans. There’s also the Fisherman’s Family sculpture near the parking for Morro Rock. )

4. Pick up some treats (or coffee) from Crills Salt Water Taffy.

5. Enjoy the beaches near here if the fog allows the sun to shine through.

6. Gape at the pile of igneous rocks that make up Morro Rock. 

7. Take some instagrammable photographs of the balanced – rock art behind the big ‘Rock.’

8. Take the trolley back to the Embarcadero.

9. Don’t forget to get some super-fresh seafood at the restaurants that line the area (If you are non-vegetarian, that is). Remember that Morro Bay is also known for its fishing business.

10. Have a beach day or catch the sunset at Morro Strand Beach on the other side of the Rock

11. Try the Thai Food at Thai Bounty (on Embarcadero) for dinner. 

12. Go for a night stroll. The city, the harbor and the Embarcadero look pretty at night. And you can also listen to the sea lions when all else is quiet.
