Art On The Beach

Have you seen the concrete cones covered with graffiti on Venice Beach? They are part of Venice's Art Walls, a public canvas for artists...

Talk about Venice Beach and the panorama that runs through my mind is a collage of art, of color, of people, music, the energy, the hippy spirit and the smoke in the air. As for the art, it seemed to be present in almost every nook and corner of Venice. Even on the beach. That’s where the Venice Art Walls are.

Walk down to the beach near the Skate Park (this one is also on the beach) and you will see two towering cones covered in graffiti. Look around the area you will see some dumpsters, some low walls even some palms coated with color.

I hear that the Venice Art Walls are also called Graffiti Walls and they are meant to be a canvas for graffiti-style art.

Artists who would like to see their art showcased here can apply for a permit that is given by a local arts organization called ICU (In Creative Unity). The permit, which can be acquired by submitting an application to the organization allows artists to paint on these concrete cones and the natural and manmade structures around it. The permit does not cost the artist(s) any money but they are required to follow some rules like: carrying the permit and painting only over the weekend.

The artwork you see on these graffiti walls on Venice Beach are from spring 2019. I’m quite sure this has been replaced by newer street art, now.

WOW. What a lot of color. Something truly different in the way of murals. Lots of different styles here, too. I’ve only been to Venice Beach once, and it was in the late 1990s. Things have probably changed a lot since I was there.

Oh yes! The colors do stand out.

It’s still full of life — maybe crazier. The energy of the place sure gives Venice Beach it’s character. 🙂
I found it to be a very interesting place.

Thank you for coming this way. 🙂

That was the best part — the street art on those tall cones.
It was even better to know that they are there just for the art. 🙂

Thank you for hosting, Sami. 🙂

Such a great way to foster creative paintings while still also fostering respect for property where the owners may not wish to be painted.

You are so right, Mae. It was so nice to know that this area is just for street art and that it was not difficult for artistes to get permission to paint here. 🙂 Such a win-win.

      Have a lovely week. 🙂

We have an art wall near our main beach in town. It was left when an old hockey arena was torn down. We also have quite a few wall murals popping up. – Margy

This was a very interesting place. Very different from the other Californian beaches.
And there’s SO MUCH art here and that only adds to the character of the place. You can visit it through this blog. 😉 There’s a post on Venice, California.

It’s quite interesting to see so many things happening across the world pertaining to art. This looks wonderful and a great opportunity for street artists! Love what they are doing there. It actually helps people to get more aware of the art scenario and paves way for more meaningful interaction. Thanks for sharing such awesome posts Dee! 🙂

      It is.
That was what I thought too — great opportunity for artists to display their work in a busy public place like this beach.
True that — there is a lot of meaningful conversation coming out of works like this. So many social messages are also being conveyed thro’ art, alle?

Thank you for coming this way and leaving a comment, Deepa. I hope you are having a good week. 🙂
