After a hike in the Sierra Foothills, one through Livermore’s countryside, one on a rocky ledge of a canyon and yet another one on the canyon floor were added to my hike journal, it was time for the next one. Hike 5, and hike 6 on its heels, turned out to be Urban Hikes on the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada.
Why do an Urban Hike in Vegas
When you’re in Las Vegas, how can you not walk through its famous strip?! I’ve been to Las Vegas a few times already but the lights and sounds and the energy of the place don’t get old. With a length of 4.2 miles, busy sidewalks, whizzing traffic, neon lights, and street performers, Las Vegas Strip is a great place for an urban hike or two.

On day 1 in Vegas (we were there after our trips to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks), I decided to record the next of my 52 Hike Challenge on Las Vegas Boulevard, or the part of it that’s the famous ‘Las Vegas Strip.’ 😉
For my first urban hike in Las Vegas, I started on East Harmon Avenue and walked north through the strip. Along the way, I stopped to gaze at and take pictures of the replicas of the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Las Vegas. Then I took the footbridge over the strip, watched a water show at the Bellagio Fountains, passed the fountains of Ceasars Palace and went on to catch The Volcano at the Mirage.
On that walk north on The Strip, I recorded a 2-mile urban hike.
The following day, we decided to get on the Monorail as the kids were excited to try it. So we got on at MGM and hit the northbound route all the way to the end of the line — to Sahara, to be precise. From there we got onto the Strip and walked south, this time, passing Circus Circus, Resorts World and The Venetian to name a few landmarks.
That walk from Sahara to Harrah’s was a distance of around 2 miles but the rest of the walking I did that morning to-and-from the monorail, and some other things we did on that side of the strip showed 5.13 miles. And later that day, we did some more walking when we made another trip to the Paris resort, this time to get onto the Observation Deck on the Eiffel Tower, and at the end of the day, I had a good 6.77 miles and over 17,000 steps.
I was outdoors for the most part. I met more than ‘the minimum of 1-mile’ that you are required to walk for the hiking challenge. And I caught some of the famous Las Vegas sights — one more time.
