To Harper Lee

Found in Tracy, CA -- A book bench with art dedicated to author Harper Lee. #MondayMural...

Harper-Lee inspired bench

‘The book to read is not the book that thinks for you but the one which makes you think,’ said acclaimed author Harper Lee. I came across the quote on some art on a library bench, few weeks ago. And this Harper-Lee-inspired bench I write about was in the public library in Tracy, California.

The bench itself is a piece of art. It is made of wood and painted on with what looks like illustrations from a children’s book. Its backrest looks like the cover of a board book. And the armrests are made to look like two books kept upright. On what’s supposed to be the spine of the books are the titles of the books that Harper Lee is remembered by: To Kill A Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman.

*This painting on the Harper-Lee inspired bench had this written on one side of it, ‘Donated by West High School Space and Engineering Academy – 2017 batch.’ Obviously dedicated to the author, the images reminded me of scenes from ‘To Kill A Mockingbird.’ The girl on the tire-swing must be Jean Louise Finch (Scout), don’t you think? And the tree in the painting reminds me of the tree with a hollow, which often had surprise-gifts for the Finch siblings.

If you would like to have a look at this book bench

The bench with the reminder of what kind of books to pick up and read, is in the children’s section of the library.

This library in Tracy, California is a branch of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library. And it is on Eaton Avenue.

Beautiful! I never had such a “swing” but got up at 6 a.m. on Saturdays to read from the moment I could.
Guess my parents were quite plesed with this, my Brother was of a different – aka louder – kind 😉

That swing would be a great place to sit — with a book (maybe a Harper Lee book). I’m sure it’s not too late for that.
Have a good week, Iris. 🙂

That is the beauty of, ” To Kill a Mocking Bird” it has slowly percolated into popular art and daily life… The artist has done good job in depicting the scenes…

It has. It still is so relevant — that book.

I loved the book theme of this bench. It made the bench all the more interesting.
I hope you are doing well, Prasad. 🙂

Children’s libraries and elementary schools often have very interesting art work that’s made or inspired by the kids themselves. I wonder what role kids played in creating this one.
