The Mysterious Thing

Found in Mill Valley, California -- The Mysterious Thing - a mural by local artist Zio Ziegler. ...

Ziegler mural

I was in a parking lot in Mill Valley when I looked up and saw this mural staring back at me. This is a Zio Ziegler mural and it sits on Cine Arts at Sequoia Theater’s outer walls.

I took several pictures of the mural, trying to cover as much of it as I could. It was packed with lots of details. I should have guessed it was a mural by Ziegler for this was not the first time I was seeing his work. I’ve come to notice that his art — most of the time — can be recognized by figures filled with patterns. After seeing this mural and going over some of the artwork on his website, I see that some bold outlines over the figures, are also part of his style.

Mill Valley mural

When I looked up this mural I found in Mill Valley, I learned it was called ‘The Mysterious Thing.’ Aptly named?

Ziegler has this to say about his works and their meanings:

I’ve often been asked what my symbols mean in relation to one another, and while I hint at their meanings with a reference in a title, their meanings are as ephemeral as the process itself. This transience of meaning serves as
catalyst for each viewer’s understanding. Because each painting lacks a singular explanation, the viewer is faced with self-reflection of his or her own life and internal pursuit. My paintings have subjectively different meanings for each person that views them, and through the observer’s own balance of reason, context, and intuitive reaction, each one serves as a starting place of thought and reflection rather than a means to an end.

If you’d like to see this mural when you are in the San Francisco-Mill Valley area, try making plans to dine at Playa. Or eat at Boo Koo, an Asian eatery in Mill Valley –just across the road from the mural.

–>Another one from Mill Valley, also said to be his work. (I’d seen this one several times on our drives towards Highway 1 north of San Francisco. But did not see it the previous time. It has been taken down, I guess.)

I can see why the artist would leave it to our interpretation. It is definitely unique, colorful, and very mysterious. Really appropriately named, and a great find.

Aptly named for sure, so much to see there. I also like the other murals in San Francisco, specially the big fish.
    Thanks for contributing Dee.
