Found in the Sierra Foothills: A Bevy of Quail on a Gate

Monday Mural -- Come, see a gate with a bevy of quail on it! This quail gate features both the Mountain Quail and the California Quail. ...

Quail Gate

For this week’s edition of Monday Mural, I’ve pulled out a gate from my travel albums. This is one with what looks like a painting of some quail on it. It was one of my trips to the Sierra Nevada Range (was it last summer or the one before that?) that I found this quail gate in a mountain town on the western slopes of the mountain range.

On this brown gate, are some mountains (the Sierras, maybe) and a set of 8 birds, half of them Mountain Quail and rest of them, California Quail. These birds are usually identified by their distinctive crested heads.

While the Mountain Quail have long and pointed plumes, that of the California Quail are more rounded and face forward. Female quail of both varieties apparently have shorter crests. My reading also tells me that Mountain Quail are usually found in the mountains in western states of the US, and the California Quail used to be found in plenty in the US Southwest, however, the numbers seem to have dwindled in CA.

California Quail

California’s state bird, the California Quail — I understand — is also known as the valley quail. It was in 1931 that this bird became one California’s symbols. Interested in knowing more about these birds with plumes on their heads? Learn about their crests, their colors and markings here.

Lovely gate/mural. Quite different from the normal gates. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Dee.

What a delightful post! The quail gate you discovered in the Sierra Nevada Range sounds absolutely charming and beautifully captures the essence of these unique birds. Your detailed descriptions of the Mountain Quail and California Quail, along with their distinctive crests, bring the scene to life. It’s fascinating to learn about their habitats and the fact that the California Quail is the state bird. Your passion for murals and nature shines through in this post, making it a joy to read. Keep sharing such wonderful finds!

      Hi Anna,
      Welcome here. 🙂

And thank you for that well-thought-out comment.

This was a different kind of a find but all this mural-spotting we’ve been doing over the last few years seem to have led to a lot of learning. Initially, I just took pictures of murals during my travels only because I enjoyed seeing art. Now I’ve been learning so much — both from my finds as well as that of the other Monday Mural participants. This is fun. 🙂

      Thanks again. 🙂

I like them a lot. I find them very cute. I used to take the backroads on the way to my old job and I often see them in the fields.

      They are very unique-looking birds.
I keep thinking we should be seeing more of them around here. It’s nice to know that you still see enough quails. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by, M. 🙂
